Check out my latest work!
As long as I can remember I have been drawing and painting the natural world. While my interest in art has never waned, I pursued a career in biology. I received a BS in Wildlife Biology in 2007 and a MS in Marine Biology in 2013. Currently I am a wildlife biologist and together with fishing and hunting, find inspiration daily in nature.
I have a passion for working with wood. Indeed, my earlier works were hand-carved duck and shorebird decoys. Soon after I discovered the joy of bringing driftwood and discarded lumber back to life with vibrant paintings of fish and other wildlife.
Both of my grandfathers were instrumental in inspiring my art. One was an avid collector of shells, fossils, and butterflies while the other had a passion for woodcarving. Some of my fondest childhood memories were discovering nature with them along shorelines and treelines. I continue to explore above and below the waves to this day.
Want to preserve the memory of your catch or some other special moment you had in nature? Check out the options below and drop me a message to let me know what you'd like.
First I will need to know what you'd like painted and how large. Did you catch a unique, trophy, or otherwise special fish? All I need is the length and a picture if you have one. No trophy? No problem! I can paint just about any creature you'd like including your pet's face on a fish! I'd be happy to recreate any painting you see in the gallery or something new, I love a challenge!
I chose to work on wood because, just like the fish painted on them, wood has a story of its own. From sprout to tree to lumber and then to the studio, the wood has journeyed through time and space bearing witness to its passage with grain, gouges, holes, and knots. Driftwood may have picked up some hitchhikers like shipworms and barnacles or have been polished smooth by tumbling down the Mighty Mississippi from far away lands. The warmth and character of wood gives a whole other dimension to
Most people prefer a simple single or two-tone background behind their fish/animal. I will do my best to accommodate you if are trying to match colors to a theme.
Conversely, some customers prefer the natural wood in lieu of a painted background.
For additional cost, I can create a more elaborate background such as habitat scenes, bait/prey species, or "artist choice" expressions in multicolor extravagance
This is discarded wood I have recovered, cleaned, and prepped for painting. Unless otherwise specified, most paintings will be on this wood
Modified reclaimed wood made to look weathered and rustic. Perfect for breaking out of a traditonal rectangular look!
Driftwood is recovered from Gulf-coast beaches and the Mississippi River. Erosion, shipworms, and barnacles sculp unique pieces I put together for a truly one of a kind media!
Below are alternative background designs to the standard 1 or 2 color backgrounds
Sometimes its best to let the natural wood show off on its own. Plain, unpainted backgrounds can make certain species "jump" off the wood.
Want your subject posed in its natural environment? I can add habitat features such as rocks, vegetation, and prey species
Backgrounds can be enhanced to convey movement, emotion, or sensation by playing with color and shape
